Amherst Orthodontics Sponsors Internet Safety Seminar
seminar
Melissa Royer, Seminar Speaker

Amherst Orthodontics was happy to sponsor an Internet Safety Seminar for Parents at the Bedford High School Auditorium. As orthodontists, we are in the unique position of associating with many of our area youth and we were moved to sponsor this Internet Safety Seminar to help protect young people.

The seminar speakers were Melissa Royer and Tim Craig. Tim, a Manchester Police Officer, is a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children task force along with the NH Cyber Crime task force. He provided insights on what is being done to prevent Internet crimes. Melissa is outstanding in her field and trains community members about the dangers of the Internet and offered simple solutions to protect our vulnerable members of society. The purpose of the seminar was to educate parents on the precautions necessary to catch and prevent ALL forms of online abuse. Each attendee received a take-home packet to make implementing the seminar’s suggestions at home easy.

We plan to continue to offer seminars for our parents and patients alike. We’ll keep you posted on upcoming seminars!

Their Mission!

school visit
February is National Children's Dental Health Month and to celebrate this, every year Dr. Deb and Dr. Diane visit area schools teaching the importance of good oral hygiene and how to keep teeth healthy. They recently visited Wilkins third graders and are shown here demonstrating proper flossing technique using several students as ‘teeth'. "If we can help one child, save one tooth, our time here is well spent", explains Dr. Deb. "Our school visitation program began 17 years ago and we are passionate about our message."

Amherst Orthodontics Awards Dentistry Merit Badge

badgeDr. Diane (left) and Dr. Deb (right) helped the above troop earn their Dentistry Merit Badge.

Dr. Deb (left) and Dr. Diane (right) helped Boy Scouts representing Troops #22 (Amherst) and #48 (Merrimack) earn their Dentistry Merit Badge.

Amherst Orthodontics continues to host a Dentistry Merit Badge at their office, where Boy Scouts are invited to attend and earn their badge. Troop 22 leader, Mr. Donald Crement,  said, "The Boy Scouts really need to have mentors in their community teach them about their professions or interests. It's a great way for the scouts to learn about options for their futures, but also continue their education outside of a school environment."

The merit badge system allows the Boy Scouts to not only learn about various topics like Medicine, Law, Fishing, Boating, Hunting, and Dentistry to name a few, but also encourages them to develop leadership skills. In order to maintain merit badge topics, however, interest in the topic must be shown, otherwise, the topic can be retired. The Dentistry Merit Badge is one of the lesser recognized merit badges, and could be at risk to be retired. Dr. Deb and Dr. Diane, who have family members who are Eagle Scouts, felt the need to participate to keep their profession's merit badge viable.

In the two hour session, Dr. Deb demonstrated the mechanics of dentistry, such as lab work where the boys took impressions, carving, and instruments, while Dr. Diane focused on the education of basic dental principles, such as oral hygiene, oral diseases, and how to handle dentofacial trauma. Says Dr. Deb, "We couldn't have been more honored to host the Dentistry Merit Badge. January is National Mentoring Month, and our ability to teach such bright and interested young men about our profession is fun and rewarding. This is our opportunity to break down the barriers and perceptions of our profession." Added Dr. Diane, "We've always wanted to do this for our patients, and are thrilled that our first Merit Badge Session was a success! We also want to invite any other interested Boy Scout members from any troop to participate. We can't wait to do more!"

To find out more about how your troop members can participate in earning a Dentistry Merit Badge with Drs. Deb and Diane, please contact their office, Amherst Orthodontics, at 672-0844.

Local Career Fairs!

Who knew that professions in dentistry could be fun? We did, and that's what our office set out to show! This year, we got invitations to participate in the Wilton Area High School's job fair, and with the Southern New Hampshire Medical Centers' Career Night in Health Professions. We're honored to participate, and we love what we do. What's better than sharing that enthusiasm with our communities. Who knows, we may be coming to a community near you soon! We also raffled gift certificates to Barnes and Nobles to the interested participants.

Repeat Performance

Dr. Deb has been asked to return to lecture once again to the graduating hygiene class of the New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, New Hampshire. "I love talking about orthodontics, and these graduating hygienists are like sponges. They want to absorb it all so they can do a great job caring for their patients. Good hygiene is an integral part of successful orthodontics, and it is important that the hygienists and the orthodontists work together as a team to help teach our patients how to care for their teeth."

Dr. Deb and Dr. Diane Share in the Excitement of Steven's New Smile!

Amherst Orthodontics recently wished Steven Shropshire all the best as they shared in the excitement of his new smile!

A survivor of the 2005 Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Steven was entering his senior year at St. Augustine Catholic High School. The school campus suffered severe damage during the storm and was temporarily closed to renovate. The students were left to find new schools; many of the boys remained in the New Orleans’ area and attended local public schools.

Steven and his family chose to take advantage of the extreme generosity of Mr. Henry Horne, Assistant Headmaster of Lawrence Academy (Groton, MA). Mr. Horne had made arrangements with St. Augustine’s High School to accept some of their displaced students for the 2005-2006 academic year.

A local Amherst family with a student attending Lawrence Academy heard of the school’s proposal and opened their home to these displaced students during their stay in New England. Senior, Steven Shropshire and junior, Joe Dyson from St. Augustine’s High School took advantage of this bighearted offer and spent the 2005-2006 school year attending Lawrence Academy, residing with Terry and Robert Davis’s family in Amherst.

One of the concerns for Steven’s family was the need to secure professional orthodontic care for him during his stay in New Hampshire. Finances and excellent care were two primary concerns for the family. Terry Davis, Steven’s host mother, contacted Dr. Ned Bitsack of Merrimack, NH for his advice. On the recommendation of Dr. Bitsack, Terry contacted Dr. Deb DeBeradinis and Dr. Diane Shieh of Amherst Orthodontics.

Thanks to the kindness of Dr. Deb and Dr. Diane of Amherst Orthodontics, Steven was able to continue his orthodontic care without interruption or cost. Steven’s goal was to have his braces removed prior to his high school graduation from Lawrence Academy, at which time his family, now residing temporarily in Minnesota, would be visiting to attend the graduation ceremonies. Through the efforts of Dr. Deb and Dr. Diane, along with the members of their staff, Steven was able to share his new smile with his mother and father when they arrived for his graduation. Following his graduation, Steven will be attending Georgia Tech, while his family considers the renovation of their home in New Orleans.

Amherst Orthodontics is proud and honored to have had the opportunity to continue Steven’s orthodontic care. Dr. Deb and Dr. Diane are pleased to have been a part of the generous support Steven received in New Hampshire.
