Amherst Orthodontics Awards Dentistry Merit Badge
Amherst Orthodontics continues to host a Dentistry Merit Badge at their office, where Boy Scouts are invited to attend and earn their badge. The scouts and parents of Troop 613 recently wrote, "Thank you so much for volunteering your time and your location to cover the Dentistry Merit Badge with 16 scouts from Troop 613. You were fabulously organized and did a wonderful job! For several of the scouts this was their very first merit badge earned, so we truly appreciate your making it so enjoyable. Thank you very much!"
The merit badge system allows the Boy Scouts to not only learn about various topics like Medicine, Law, Fishing, Boating, Hunting, and Dentistry to name a few, but also encourages them to develop leadership skills. In order to maintain merit badge topics, however, interest in the topic must be shown, otherwise, the topic can be retired. The Dentistry Merit Badge is one of the lesser recognized merit badges, and could be at risk to be retired. Dr. Deb and Dr. Diane, who have family members who are Eagle Scouts, felt the need to participate to keep their profession's merit badge viable.
In the two hour session, Dr. Deb demonstrate the mechanics of dentistry, such as lab work where the boys took impressions, carving, and instruments, while Dr. Diane focused on the education of basic dental principles, such as oral hygiene, oral diseases, and how to handle dentofacial trauma. Says Dr. Deb, "We couldn't have been more honored to host the Dentistry Merit Badge. Teaching such bright and interested young men about our profession is fun and rewarding. This is our opportunity to break down the barriers and perceptions of our profession." Added Dr. Diane, "We've always wanted to do this for our patients, and are thrilled that our first Merit Badge Session was a success! We also want to invite any other interested Boy Scout members from any troop to participate. We can't wait to do more!"
To find out more about how your troop members can participate in earning a Dentistry Merit Badge with Drs. Deb and Diane, please contact their office, Amherst Orthodontics, at 672-0844.

To make sure each of our patients back-to-school experience is the best it can be, we have teamed up with nurses in 45 different schools to make sure they are prepared to handle minor orthodontic emergencies during the school day. Nurse care packets include orthodontic wax, toothbrushes and emergency care information.
A thank you from a school nurse
Dear Dr. Deb & Dr. Diane,
We want to thank you so very much for your generous gifts for the nurses office. We have gotten emergency papers in the past, but yours is particularly helpful with the detailed parts of the braces noted on the top sheet. We often call about parts broken and never know the proper names to use except for bracket, etc. Thank you again for thinking of us! Sincerely, Jeana, RN

Are you a teen 14 years or older and interested in getting straight teeth but not happy about the idea of braces? Invisalign or Invisalign Teen might be the answer! Invisalign moves teeth with a series of virtually invisible, removable plastic aligners. Call to reserve a time for your screening.

In light of our ongoing support of the American Cancer Society, we delivered bunches of daffodils to area dentists. The proceeds from each bouquet we purchase goes to the research and helping to find a cure for cancer.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Amherst Orthodontics made a generous donation of several hundred tubes of toothpaste and children's toothbrushes to the Milford SHARE program.

At the 20th anniversary of the Chamber, they were recognized for their support of community through their charitable donations, and also for their community awareness and education programs. In their acceptance speech, they conveyed, We are so grateful to the community for their ongoing support and good deeds, and we are truly humbled to have been recognized for such an honor. Look for the Granite State trophy and recognition letter from Senator Sununu! Go, team, go!
Melissa Royer, Seminar Speaker
Amherst Orthodontics was happy to sponsor an Internet Safety Seminar for Parents at the Bedford High School Auditorium. As orthodontists, we are in the unique position of associating with many of our area youth and we were moved to sponsor this Internet Safety Seminar to help protect young people.
The seminar speakers were Melissa Royer and Tim Craig. Tim, a Manchester Police Officer, is a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children task force along with the NH Cyber Crime task force. He provided insights on what is being done to prevent Internet crimes. Melissa is outstanding in her field and trains community members about the dangers of the Internet and offered simple solutions to protect our vulnerable members of society. The purpose of the seminar was to educate parents on the precautions necessary to catch and prevent ALL forms of online abuse. Each attendee received a take-home packet to make implementing the seminars suggestions at home easy.
We plan to continue to offer seminars for our parents and patients alike. Well keep you posted on upcoming seminars!

Who knew that professions in dentistry could be fun? We did, and that's what our office set out to show! This year, we got invitations to participate in the Wilton Area High School's job fair, and with the Southern New Hampshire Medical Centers' Career Night in Health Professions. We're honored to participate, and we love what we do. What's better than sharing that enthusiasm with our communities. Who knows, we may be coming to a community near you soon! We also raffled gift certificates to Barnes and Nobles to the interested participants.
Dr. Deb has been asked to return to lecture once again to the graduating hygiene class of the New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, New Hampshire. "I love talking about orthodontics, and these graduating hygienists are like sponges. They want to absorb it all so they can do a great job caring for their patients. Good hygiene is an integral part of successful orthodontics, and it is important that the hygienists and the orthodontists work together as a team to help teach our patients how to care for their teeth."
